Before You Take Kids and Grandparents Across Six Countries

Berlin, Kraków, Budapest, Vienna, Bratislava, and Prague

Six countries in two weeks. Three kids, my wife, my mom, my dad, and me. Our July 2024 route looks irresistible on a map. Before you copy it, check the part that rarely makes the photos: getting everyone from one city to the next.

Start with three nights in Berlin. Choose one main outing each day, adding a second only if everyone wants it. Protect hotel downtime and make long drives the day’s activity. This is an ambitious loop; fewer stops may suit your family better.

A Fourteen Night Route With Room to Rest

This version adds one Budapest night to our original 13 hotel nights. Choose a Friday US departure arriving Saturday. Fly home from Berlin on Day 15, also Saturday; arrival time determines how much weekend remains.

Berlin to Kraków and Kraków to Budapest need full transfer days with breaks. The hotels below come from our trip.

Watercolor-style illustration of the suggested 14-night loop with numbered city pins and six itinerary cards. Fly from the USA on Friday, arrive in Berlin on Saturday and stay three nights. Drive to Kraków for two nights, Budapest for three, Vienna for three with an optional return day trip to Bratislava, Prague for two, and Berlin for one. Fly home on Day 15, Saturday. Solid blue arrows show intercity drives, green dashed arrows show the Bratislava visit, and the airplane shows flights. This is an illustrative route, not a navigation map.

A suggested 14-night route, with flights, drives, and an optional Bratislava day trip. The text below gives the full itinerary.

What Most Families Miss

Start with the Amex wheelchair-accessible hotel search, then confirm the exact room, shower, elevator route, and connecting-room needs directly. A hotel listing cannot tell you whether a particular room will work for your family.

Check the outings, too. Berlin’s TV Tower cannot admit wheelchair users or visitors with severe walking limitations. Auschwitz-Birkenau advises against visits by children under 14. Make separate plans where needed.

Seven seats are only half the car question: will everyone’s bags fit? With a US rental brand such as Avis, confirm permission for all six countries and your vehicle class, plus child seats, tolls, and written terms. A US brand does not guarantee refunds.

Bottom Line

Memories are priceless. If this trip fits your parents’ comfort and energy now, make room for it. You worked hard for time together. Leave an afternoon unclaimed, linger over a café table, and let everyone enjoy being there.
