Japan Cherry Blossoms and Hong Kong Without Rushing the Family
Cherry blossoms and curious deer at Nara Park during our spring 2025 trip. Photo provided by the author.
The deer in Nara Park seemed completely unbothered by the people around them. Above us, cherry blossoms filled the branches. That was a moment worth slowing down for on our Japan and Hong Kong trip.
We traveled from March 22 to April 5, 2025. For families bringing children and aging parents, the lesson is simple: choose a few memorable outings and leave time to enjoy them together.
Start with four nights in Hong Kong, then three in Osaka, three in Kyoto and two in Tokyo. Keep the first few days gentle, make Nara a highlight, and protect hotel downtime. These are our city stays, with suggested sightseeing below.

The 15 Day Plan at a Gentle Pace
March 22 and 23. Leave Washington and allow for long-haul travel and the time change.
March 24 to 27 in Hong Kong. Settle in on the 24th. Try the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront on the 25th and a Star Ferry ride on the 26th. Leave the 27th for rest. Hotel base: The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong.
March 28 to 30 in Osaka. Fly from Hong Kong on the 28th. Visit Osaka Castle Park on the 29th. Make the 30th an optional Kobe lunch trip or a hotel day. Hotel base: Osaka Marriott Miyako.
March 31 to April 2 in Kyoto. Transfer on the 31st. Set aside April 1 for Nara Park and April 2 for a short Kamogawa riverside walk. Our Kyoto stays included SOWAKA and The Ritz-Carlton.
April 3 and 4 in Tokyo. Transfer on the 3rd and settle into The Tokyo Station Hotel. On the 4th, try a short Meguro River blossom walk and a relaxed meal.
April 5. Fly from Tokyo Haneda to Washington Dulles. Keep the following day free to recover.

What Most Families Miss
The calendar cannot guarantee blossoms. Weather shifts flowering dates. Keep sightseeing flexible and check the Japan National Tourism Organization forecast before choosing a park day.
Nara’s deer are still wild. They may approach people, but do not tease or grab them. Feed only the designated deer crackers and stay close to small children. See the official Nara deer guidance.
Check the whole accessible route. Ask about the exact room, bathroom, elevator route and station exit. The Tokyo Station Hotel lists accessible facilities. Star Ferry directs wheelchair passengers to the lower deck. Confirm arrangements before travel.
Prepare before flying. Use Visit Japan Web for advance arrival procedures, and confirm each child’s ticket and baggage allowance directly with the operating airlines.
