Spain and Portugal With Kids and Grandma
Why I Would Allow Two Weeks
Our view at the bullfight during our March 24 to April 3, 2024 family trip. Photo courtesy of the author.
Three kids, Grandma, and a bullfight in Spain. My wife and I took our children and her mother to Portugal and Spain, and enjoying that bullfight together was one highlight of our trip. The photo above is our view from the stands.
Before you copy our itinerary, count the hotel stays: five in nine nights. Here is our route, plus the slower version I would suggest for another family.
Fly into Lisbon, travel through Seville and Granada, then return to Lisbon. Allow fourteen nights, keep the first three gentle, and plan one main outing a day. Leave time to enjoy the hotels, too.

An illustrated overview of our original trip. Ronda and Setenil were planned stops. Flight paths may include connections. The slower fourteen-night itinerary follows.

What Most Families Miss
Book the visit the whole family can share. At the Alhambra, arrange children’s tickets and the timed Nasrid Palaces entry if you want to see them. Strollers cannot enter the buildings. In Córdoba, the Mosque-Cathedral’s bell tower excludes children under seven and visitors with reduced mobility.
We enjoyed the bullfight together. If you are considering one, check the schedule and seating access, and decide whether an event involving animal injury and death suits your children.
Goldie’s Table for a Slower Fourteen Night Trip
This suggested itinerary gives our route more room. Depart the United States late Friday for a Saturday arrival. Stay fourteen nights and aim to fly home Saturday morning on Day 15, leaving the weekend to settle back in before Monday. Check available flight times.

A driving day is already an outing. Choose Ronda or Setenil on the return to Seville, and leave the second stop optional. We booked a seven-seat rental for six people. Compare Avis or another U.S. rental brand, checking cross-border permission, driving documents, child seats, and luggage space with the seats in use.
For hotel access, use the American Express wheelchair-accessible filter. Four Seasons Ritz Lisbon and Hotel Alfonso XIII appear in its accessible listings. Confirm the exact room, bathroom, elevator, and entrance with each hotel, including the other properties above. Keep some afternoons free to enjoy the place you booked.
The extended packing table follows. Choose what fits your children’s ages and the outings you plan.

Use and what to check |
|---|---|
For luggage, keys, or a stroller. AirTags are for belongings, not tracking children or grandparents. [8] |
UPPAbaby G-LUXE single stroller; UPPAbaby side-by-side double stroller |
Choose one that fits your children and car. Check age limits, folded size, and site restrictions. |
An option where strollers are restricted. Check fit and size limits; keep the baby’s airway clear. |
Optional pool clothing. Check the garment’s UPF label; exposed skin still needs sun protection. |
Optional outdoor clothing. Confirm both insect-treatment instructions and the individual garment’s UPF rating. |
Hawaiian Tropic SPF 70 sunscreen; Babyganics SPF 50 sunscreen |
Check formula and age guidance. Follow the label and use shade and clothing too. [9] |
For the baby’s travel kit; choose and use a model according to your pediatrician’s guidance. |
Pack only if used for your child; follow cleaning instructions and match filters to the device. |
Useful during toilet training. Check stability on the toilet and clean before repacking. |
Huggies diapers; Pull-Ups training pants; Huggies baby wipes |
Bring the usual size and extras for delays. Wipes do not disinfect surfaces. |
For planned pool time. Change frequently; swim diapers are not leakproof. [9] |
A training aid is not automatically a life jacket. Choose an approved, correctly fitted life jacket when needed and supervise closely. [9] |
Optional feeding privacy. Keep the baby’s face visible and avoid overheating. |
Optional only if the model permits travel use. Follow mounting instructions; do not alter hotel alarms. |
Leave U.S. plug covers home for this route; ask hotels about childproofing compatible with their outlets. [10] |
Useful for temporary labels. It does not make cords, outlets, or sharp edges child-safe. |
Small additions to the family’s first-aid kit for minor scrapes; keep dressings clean and dry. |
Optional for suitable outdoor use. Keep netting secured away from infants; check fit and sleep guidance. |
Optional if needed. Follow age and application instructions for the exact product. [9] |
Optional for rain or pool days. Check fit and closure; test before putting your phone inside. |
For bright outings. Check fit and the product’s UV protection specification. |
Usually optional for a short hotel trip. Confirm model support, setup, and network requirements. |
Check European plug compatibility and every device’s voltage rating. A plug adapter is not a voltage converter. [10] |
Useful when the rental car has a USB-A port; confirm the port and your phone connector. |
For a compatible USB-C device. Standard airplane headphone sockets need a different connection. |
Verizon international plans; AT&T international plans; T-Mobile international plans |
Confirm Portugal and Spain coverage, data limits, call charges, and activation with your carrier. |
Bottom Line
Memories are priceless. I am glad our children and their grandmother shared this trip. Choose a pace that lets your family enjoy being together now, with room for a palace, a memorable evening, and an afternoon with nothing booked. You worked hard for this.
