How to play Xiangqi

Win by checkmating the enemy General (將) — just like chess. You play red and move first.
General 帥: one step along the lines, only inside the 3×3 palace. The two Generals may never face each other on an open file.
Advisor 仕: one step diagonally, palace only. Elephant 相: two points diagonally, never across the river, blocked if the middle point is occupied.
Horse 傌: one step straight then one diagonally out — blocked if the first step is occupied. Chariot 俥: like a rook.
Cannon 炮: moves like a chariot, but captures by jumping over exactly one piece (the "screen").
Soldier 兵: one step forward; after crossing the river it may also step sideways. It never retreats.
