How the pieces move

• General (楚/漢) & Guard (士): one step inside the palace (the 3×3 with the X), along the lines.
• Chariot (車): straight lines, any distance (also along the palace X).
• Cannon (包): jumps exactly one piece to move or capture — but never over or onto another Cannon.
• Horse (馬): one step straight, then one diagonal — blocked if a piece sits in front.
• Elephant (象): one step straight, then two diagonals — blocked if the path is occupied.
• Soldier (卒/兵): one step forward or sideways (never back); diagonally forward inside the palace.
• Win: trap the opponent's General so it cannot escape.
