How to play chess

Get your opponent's king into "checkmate" — a trap it cannot escape. Here's how each piece moves:

Pawn

Moves forward one square (two on its very first move). It captures by moving one square diagonally.

Rook

Moves in straight lines — any number of squares up, down, or sideways.

Bishop

Moves diagonally any number of squares, staying on one color.

Knight

Moves in an "L" — two squares one way, then one to the side. It can jump over other pieces.

Queen

The most powerful — moves any number of squares in any straight or diagonal line.

King

Moves one square in any direction. Keep it safe — if it's trapped, the game is over.

  • To move: tap one of your pieces — green dots show where it can go — then tap a dot.
  • A red ring warns when one of your pieces could be captured.
