The basic federal rule is a gross-income test of 130% of the Federal Poverty Level (Source: USDA FNS), and many states set the limit higher. But here’s what changes everything for seniors: if you’re 60 or older, you get extra deductions — especially for out-of-pocket medical expenses — and those deductions can qualify you even if your income looks a little over the line at first glance.
